TAYLOR SPENT the car ride in silence. His dad had taken one look at him, hugged him hard, refused to cry, bundled him up as best he could when he stood a head taller than the man, and put him in the passenger seat of the car. He kept looking at him strangely, but Taylor didn’t care; his dad could do whatever he needed to feel okay with it. Taylor was busy staring at Sietta in the back seat. He was quiet, and in the afternoon light, his skin looked paler than usual, the circles under his eyes darker. His hair had been tied back in a loose ponytail, but strands had escaped and now stuck out in all directions. He didn’t seem to notice. He blinked, often and slowly, in that way people did when they were starting to fall asleep in the car, but his eyes never remained closed.
“Tired?” Daniel cast a glance at Sietta in the rear-view mirror.
“No more so than usual. Just… not used to being in cars so much. Puts me to sleep.”
“And yet, you’re not asleep,” Daniel mused, but his smile let Sietta know he was teasing. Sietta simply shrugged in response.
Cars overflowed from the yard when they got to the house. A police car sat out the front, and another was down the street, helping the family clean up their broken fence. It took effort to get out of the car, and not only because he didn’t want to. Taylor had to admit that despite the injury not being awful, it still hurt like crazy, and he had to be careful not to jostle his chest too much or it pinched horribly now the pain medication was beginning to wear off. He was much happier once he was on his own two feet.
The front door slammed open, and Clay barged out, Joel following far more sedately. Clay nearly grabbed him in a bear hug, stopping at the last second, hands hovering before carefully settling one over the thick bandage, the other on the back of Taylor’s neck. He pulled Taylor in close, until their foreheads were pressed close together and he could feel Clay’s breath on his cheek.
“Fuck, Tay….”
Taylor sighed and pulled him in with his good arm, holding him close despite the pain that shot through him at the action. “I’m fine, Clay. Really. Clean shot, minimal damage, should heal up in a few weeks just fine. Sorry I scared you.”
Clay didn’t say anything, but he didn’t move away either, and Taylor met Joel’s bemused expression over Clay’s shoulder. Taylor let Clay linger, holding him tight and waiting it out, knowing he would have needed the same if their positions were reversed.
“I kissed Sietta,” Taylor whispered in Clay’s ear, and that finally got him moving. Clay jerked back, looking hard into Taylor’s face and then slowly grinning with him, seeing the heat of it in Taylor’s eyes.
“And you liked it,” Clay noticed, his smile only widening, and Taylor dared to steal a glance at Sietta, who was talking by the car with Daniel.
